Tucson Extreme Home Makeover – Foundation

calendar January 30, 2009

Today the debris from last nights demolition was removed from the site and the all important foundation prep work took place. This is a time consuming process but oh so important. No one wants to have a toilet drain coming up in the middle of a hallway.

Once the debris is removed the home site has to be laid out, staked and dug. All the plumbing (water and sewer) lines as well as electrical and these days, cable and telephone lines are positioned where they need to be located.

Forms are put in place and gravel brought in to bury and protect all the pipes, cables and wires.

Tonight the foundation is scheduled to be poured as a monolithic pour. There isn’t time to do a post tension slab on site in this type of build. However, monolithic foundations are common in Tucson and I know there is going to be a lot of rebar and special concrete used which will set up quickly so the framing can begin tomorrow.

Metal studs are scheduled to be used. This is especially good because in Tucson where the saying is “If you don’t have termites you will”, metal studs really do serve as a deterrent to the pesky insects.

You can see from our video shot tonight around 9 pm the work is proceeding. It will be interesting to see the progress tomorrow and how the construction process is altered using Metal instead of wood for the framing process.

Metal studs will be one of the unique features of this Extreme Makeover Home Edition build.

I can tell you this much, driving one of those bobcat’s is as much fun as it look like it would be.
