Arizona Spring Wildflowers
The spring wildflowers are beginning to show up. I traveled up to Picacho Peak State Park on Thursday February 21, 2008 in the afternoon to check out the early arrival of the Mexican Poppies. The rain and weather have been just right to bring them out earlier than normal. Normal in the sense that some years they don’t appear at all. I got there about 4 pm. and the best time to view the poppies is 10:30 to 3:30 according to the rangers.
This year is starting out looking like it will be a bumper crop of wild flowers in southern Arizona. It all depends on the rain and the temperatures. If we get both in the right mix. . . well lets just say stock up on your digital film.
The season at Picacho Peak can last until early April. I’ll be making another trip up there this week to see how the season is progressing. For now here is a sample of what I found late Thursday.

There is a fee of $6 per car for parking and to help keep the park in good shape so we can visit, hike the trails, use the picnic facilities and enjoy the wildflowers for many years to come.
One of the things added this year is the Ranger Cam. You can find out the progress of several state parks and the wildflowers in bloom.
