HIRISE High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment

hirise image of marsHave you ever heard someone say, “I wish the paper would print some good news for a change.” I know I have, I’ve even said it on occasion. Today we got some good news on the front page of the “Arizona Daily Star”. HIRISE is something everyone in Tucson can be proud to show off. Clicking on the image to the right will take you to the page for this image on the HIRISE website. This full image size is 31167 x 69773 (1062.6 MB)

There are a lot of ties to the astronomy community in Tucson. The U of A has several astronomy related projects and don’t forget the national observatory is at Kitt Peak just outside of Tucson. This particular project at the University of Arizona is the NASA funded UA Lunar & Planetary Lab. The mission of the lab is to make Mars images available to everyone, that is why it is also called “The People’s Camera”. All the images are free.

The HIRISE website recently underwent some major changes making it easier to navigate and using technology to bring those images home even on a dial-up connection. If you want to see what this image looks like just click on the image above and it will load it in your browser.

Once it is loaded click on the image and wait till the enlarge image box appears in the lower right hand corner of the screen. Click on that box and now you are really looking at a close-up view of Mars.

If you download the image viewer found on the site you can get even closer.

For complete details read the article in the Star and check out the HIRISE website. This is a great project and one we can be proud to have based in Tucson at the U of A.
