Oracle AZ A Great Day Trip
Last Saturday afternoon we decided to take a short half day trip up Route 77 (Oracle Road) to Oracle. Barbara and World Traveler have gone up there a couple of times in the winter to build snowmen and throw some snowballs. I was up there once a long time ago for a very brief drive through the community.
This time it was grab the cameras and go see what we could find to shoot. We found a lot to shoot and a great place to take a day trip. There are parks, and restaurants. The Oracle Inn Steakhouse with the “Time Out” area for naughty cowboys and the Oracle State Park on the out skits of town.
There is plenty of old rusty crap mining equipment sitting around town for those that want something to focus their camera on. Driving around the various streets in and around town was a blast. The air is clean and cool. There is grass growing in yards and Iris, real iris planted in the ground and not in pots. I saw a lilac bush. Haven’t seen one of those since I moved to Arizona.
There are gardens all around town and flowers growing everywhere.
The Historic Union Church built in 1901 is on the main street and there is a little park/picnic area by the church.
Sue & Jerry’s
We drove through town in kind of a “take it all in” approach then drove back through and stopped at the place that really caught our eye.
Sue and Jerry’s is billed as “Oracle’s most unique shopping experience” and it lives up to that billing. Stopping there is like a trip down memory lane. I can’t do it justice in the short space I have here. Jerry is an exceptional artist and his work is nothing short of amazing.
You can see some of his work at his website www.jerryparra.com But you have to see it in person to really enjoy it.
There are a few images of his work in the gallery collection below. They are salted throughout Sue and Jerry’s. This is a must see if you are in Oracle.
When we got back home I discovered this coming weekend is the Oracle Artist Studio Tour.
Oracle Artist Studio Tour
They have their own website with map and artists who are participating in the tour. Sue and Jerry’s is one of the many stops on the tour. The tour goes both Saturday and Sunday April 3 – 5 2009 from 10 am – 4 pm each day. There are lunch specials at some of the stops along the way.
We are busy at the Tucson Home and Patio show on Saturday, but we are planning on going back up to Oracle for Sunday’s studio tour.
This morning we were talking about how much Oracle reminds us of the mid-west. There are Iris, grass, trees, gardens and “real dirt”. You can plant a garden in Oracle.
This summer we are looking forward to getting away from the Tucson heat with quick trips to Oracle. From where we live it is about a 30 minute drive. But right now the wildflowers are great and the Iris are in bloom everywhere in Oracle. The Oracle Inn has a great menu and very pleasant atmosphere and everything on the menu is under $25 with lunch specials for under $10. Pick up one of their take out menus and learn how the town was named after a ship built in Bath, Maine.
