Many of the older homes in Tucson use a system called Evaporative Cooling. Sometimes they are referred to as “Swamp Coolers”. The same effect of cooling the air by evaporation is used by many residences and restaurants with outdoor dining.
In the summer it can be in the 100’s and in the fall it can still be in the high 90’s when it is time for the evening meal. So many places have outdoor misters which blow a fine mist of water around the outside perimeter of the patio providing cooler air for outdoor dining. If there is a slight breeze you might get a little wet while eating. But most of the time you won’t mind even if you do. Just keep the bread and chips covered or away from the mist.
Sometimes visitors to Tucson will be driving the streets wondering what all that “steam” is coming from the patios. It isn’t steam, but it is water. And if you venture to eat outdoors during the summer or early fall, you will want to find a place with the “Steam” turned on.
It is amazing how much cooler it is inside the perimeter of the misters. If you are going to be dining outside in the summer in Tucson you want to dine with the Misters. : )
