Pioneer Spirit

What I admire most about the pioneer spirit is the spirit itself. There was no government to take care of people. There were no safety nets, no health insurance or jobs for that matter. There was work, and there were people with skills to do the work.
Life wasn’t easy, and entertainment could be as simple as singing a song and knowing you had food to eat and neighbors that were close but not too close to depend on. Kids didn’t need things to keep them occupied, they had lots to keep them occupied.
I don’t know how much credit we can give them for being pioneers. I say that because they knew nothing less. They could load their “stuff” in a wagon or on their back. They had family and knowledge of how to do “stuff” rather than own “stuff”.
They made do with what they had and did what they could to make life better for themselves and their families.
The pioneer spirit has been dormant or forgotten in many ways today. It is time for it to blossom again. We need pioneers. Individuals who have skills and are willing to use them and teach them to others.
But more than the skills we need the attitude. Pioneers don’t wait for things to get better, they make them better.
Do we honestly believe those pioneers that came before were better educated, more knowledgeable or intelligent than we are today? I don’t think so, but they did more with less than most even believe possible today. Why? Because of the pioneer spirit. It isn’t knowledge or intellect we lack, it is spirit.
May these difficult times produce the rain and fertilizer needed to germinate the pioneer spirit in all of us.
