Tucson Going Green on St Patrick’s Day

This definitely the year of going green. It is one of the buzz words that got rolling in 2008 and is in full swing in 2009. There is now a “Green Designation” for Realtors (squiggly thingy here). They can pay $399 and take a 3 day class and have the “Green Designation”
Tucson Gets to be Green on St. Patrick’s Day
Then it is back to brown and shades thereof. If there is one thing many miss when the come to Tucson it is Green. Brown is a very common theme here in the desert. Cactus are Green, but not green, green, as in trees and leaves.
Green grass is limited in Tucson. The buying and selling of lawn mowers is not a business you want to be trying to make a living on in Tucson.
Going Green is the Buzz for 2009
Now we are hearing more and more about Green Building and Green homes, meaning more environmentally friendly homes. Or it means they are more expensive to build but more economical to maintain. For some it means these homes leave a smaller carbon footprint (do homes leave footprints?). This week I heard the green building mean more of the materials in a home can be recycled when the home is torn down.
Honestly, I haven’t seen too many homes being torn down in my lifetime and the ones I have for the most part do have a lot of the materials recycled.
When Green isn’t a Good Thing
There are times when going green isn’t a good thing. I’ve found some things hiding in the corners of the fridge that went green, it wasn’t a pretty sight. Green treating lumber keeps it from being eaten by termites, but use it around a barbeque and you can poison your food with the chemicals used to treat the wood. (That’s not a good idea, I hope you got that).
I Grew Up Green
When I was growing up we were all about green, we didn’t call it green back then, we didn’t call it recycling either, we called it survival. Composting garbage, re-using bent nails, all wood was salvaged till it was used to heat the garage. Everything was used and reused till there wasn’t any life left in it and then sometimes mom and dad would find another use for whatever it was. String, rope, used inner tubes, parts on cars, you name it there was always another use for it.
As Kermit Says “It Isn’t Easy Being Green”
It isn’t easy being green and it isn’t easy reading this on Green. If you have had a few pints of green beer it is even more difficult to read this on green. I promise, I won’t use the green background again, at least not until next year when we are all wearing the green, even a blog.
Whatever going green means to you, for most people today it means if you aren’t wearing green you better be ready to be pinched.
