Frankie candy headEvery year on Halloween the streets fill with little children and some not so little, dressed in all sorts of attire. Some are super heroes and others fairy princesses.

They all have one thing in common, a sack or bag of some kind as a place to put all the candy they can carry. Back home they will be sugared up and scrapped from the ceiling for days, unless someone wiser steps in to regulate the sugar intake and sneak a piece for themselves from the booty.

To the right is Frankie, he helps pass out candy every year, his head is hollow, but don’t hold that against him. He lives in a box in the garage until two weeks before Halloween. Then he gets to come out, stand by the front door and have his head filled with candy and a few fortune cookies.

Less Frankie and the fortune cookies, I’m sure this is a scene played out all across the country either on Halloween or Begger’s Nights.

In Tucson though there is one difference the kids that have lived here for a while learn about. They don’t just carry and old sack or bag to put the candy in. They carry Thermal insulated bags with a freezer gel pack inside to keep the candy from getting too warm. Chocolate that gets warm in the desert heat can be really messy to get out of the wrapper. It also turns a funny color if you put it in the refrigerator once it is melted.

Thermal Bag for CandyIt is easy to spot the veteran Tucson Halloweeners. Yes, I made up Halloweeners. The thermal bags are easy to spot as are the big smiles on their faces as they know their candy will be perfectly preserved for them when they get home.

Sometimes there are several children in the family all young enough their parent are standing there behind them or on the sidewalk with a wagon. Sometimes the wagon carries younger brothers and sisters too young to carry a bag. Sometimes there is a cooler in the wagon. The children don’t have to carry thermal bags and freezer gel packs. They go to several homes then the parents dump their bags in the cooler to keep the candy from melting and the sacks from getting too heavy.

Tucson Halloweens are a lot of fun. It is never rainy or cold. It is warm and pleasant usually with a gentle breeze and the children and the parents have a great time.

Yes, They Scream “Trick or Treat” when they come to the door. No, they don’t carry thermal bags with frozen gel packs. “Trick or Treat” : )
