I first learned about this event and desertharvesters.org while attending a session on water harvesting by Brad Lancaster.
This was back in the spring when Brad said they hold the mesquite millings in the fall. I’ve been seeing the pods on the trees for months now and remember they don’t mill during the monsoon season because of the humidity, preferring instead to mill in the fall. There are still plenty of pods and they are better dried and ready to be milled.
The next event is being held tomorrow. I’ve been wanting to try a mesquite pancake and I hear chocolate chip cookies made with some mesquite flour are incredible. Mesquite flour is also supposed to be very good for diabetics.
Even though this event is being held near downtown and all the construction I’m going to brave it and head down there to taste those pancakes and hopefully spot a cookie while I’m at it. : )

3nd Annual Santa Cruz River Farmers’ Market Mesquite Milling and Mesquite Pancake Chow Down

This event will occur at the best Farmers’ market in Tucson at the Santa Cruz river park (west side of the river) just south of Speedway Blvd on Riverside Road. It is hosted by the Southside Food Production Network and the Tucson Community Food Bank. For more information call 622-0525. Ask for Dana or Kelley.
The Arizona Daily Star reported on Monday the event times as 3 pm to 6 pm. If this is critical to your planning I would recommend calling Dana or Kelly for clarification of the times.
If you can’t make this one there is one more event scheduled for this fall on their site.

9am - 2pm
The mesquite pancake breakfast starts at 9am and keeps going until everyone is full or we run out of batter. Prickly pear, mesquite, and maple syrups will accompany the pancakes. All ingredients will be organic. A $3 donation is requested for the pancake breakfast. Live music will accompany the good food. Recipe books will be on hand for purchase.

Hi LS and the rest interested,
It was something to see the line of people with mesquite pods in various containers and garbage bags ready to be milled.
I drifted over the the mesquite pancake display and paid my dollar for a pancake. It wasn’t big, but that’s ok didn’t want to ruin my supper : ) It was different. I tried some mesquite honey, prickly pear syrup on the pancake.
It was different, did I say that? I’ve yet to taste a mesquite flour chocolate chip cookie. I’ll wait on that experience for now and just eat the chocolate chips.
