Tucson Monsoon Season to start June 15 2008

The National Weather Service has decided to change the way the start and end of monsoon season in Tucson will be determined. Till this year it has been by number of days in a row with a certain Dew point. This year they are going to set June 15, 2008 as the start date and September 30, 2008 as the end date.
They believe there has been too much emphasis on when the season begins and ends and not enough on the dangers of thunderstorms and flooding that can occur during the season itself.
By setting a start date the media can focus on the Monsoon itself with rains, lightening, thunder, hale, and flooding. Every year there are vehicles caught in flood waters because drivers ignore flood warnings and drive through washes which have filled with rapid running water.
Now we all know when to get ready for the start of the rainy season in Tucson.

You can’t time stupid. People will drive into water regardless of what the weatherman says.

Regardless, I can’t wait until it begins. Love all that thunder and lightening! Made it worth moving to Arizona.

Ginny,
I’m with you. It is one of my favorite times of the year here in Tucson. Let the rains begin.

Ah, lots of good memories come from monsoon season. We tend to have a lot of fun – almost like Christmas in July! Definitely makes summer in the desert worthwhile.

Margaret,
Everything you have said is true. I look forward to monsoon each summer and can’t wait for it to start this year.

My personal favorite is watching the people jump in a tube and cruise down the washes. Stupidity in person is a wonderful thing to watch!

Ryan,
LOL, a natural thinning of the gene pool : )

This is the dumbest thing I have ever heard from the NWS.
Let’s take a scientific explanation for the monsoon and dumb it down for the “media”.
Good work.
