ice teaThe Monsoon Season in Tucson is winding down for this year, but, it isn’t over yet.

There are several ways of know the monsoon is here in Tucson. Things start to sweat. Most people that haven’t lived here don’t think much about sweat on ice tea, but around here it doesn’t happen most of the year. It can be over a 100 degrees outside and the humidity is so low everything just evaporates.

But when Monsoon season arrives it all changes. Things start to sweat, a lot.

Can’t leave the milk out long or it will sweat. Can’t leave the potato chips unsealed or they go soggy.

Of course for many people this is a way of life, but here in Tucson it is a small annoyance for a few weeks in the summer.

One of the things we always tell people when they come into Tucson to look for a new home is “Make sure you drink a lot of water.” It is very easy to get dehydrated here in Tucson. When I first moved here I would get these terrible headaches. After a couple of weeks someone told me I wasn’t drinking enough water.

I said “But I’m not hot and I sure don’t sweat like I did back in Iowa.” I started drinking water even if I didn’t sweat and even if I didn’t feel thirsty. The headaches went away.

However, during Tucson Monsoon Season, everything sweats. I think even the fish sweat during Monsoon season.

arizona daily star deliveredAnother way you know it is monsoon is the morning newspaper. All the rest of the year it comes folded with a rubber band around it. I have a lot of those rubber bands. Sometimes I put a bunch of them in or on world traveler’s car. . .

During monsoon season they come in a nice little plastic baggie; see through of course you want to make sure no critter took shelter during a shower in your paper.

I don’t have a good way to put sound on hear. So imagine you see a bright flash of light and then a loud bang. That is another sure sign it is Monsoon season.

The sun can be shining on you and up ahead there is nothing but clouds and rain and you are headed right for it. The Tucson Monsoon season is winding down, but there are still a few good storms left in it before the skies clear and the rubber bands once again appear around the newspaper.

    Thank you,

Our new blog is a labor of love. I really like having room for large photos and posts that appear short because I have a lot of room to write.
