sycamore tree leafIt has been a long week here in Tucson, but a productive one. I’ve noticed something fascinating recently. I’ve lived here for almost 10 years and in many ways I’ve never stopped to look around. Everyday there is a list of things yet to be done when the sun has long set and the time to rest the head and brain has passed as well.

Suddenly, I’m more aware of my surroundings. I’m looking with different eyes, or I should say lens. I’ve always enjoyed taking photographs, but due to changes in routine, technology, and time, I’ve left this passion for images slip by the wayside of a very busy lifestyle.

Then I started blogging and carrying a camera with me practically everywhere I went. No I did carry it everywhere I went except to bed at night. (I know some of you are thinking, you took it in the restroom? yeah, I have some really interesting Men’s room shots, no people in them, but I will probably never share them unless I really need something to write about some day. I promise I’ll never share them : )

sycamore treeI’m seeing all kinds of things about Tucson I never noticed before. Some of these things are the big sky kind of things where it looks like the scene before me just goes on and on and on.

Some things are in the tiny details of everyday life. Things we almost see but don’t. Like looking a bee in the eye and noticing it kind of looks like it is smiling.

Today, I had an early morning trip to the audiologist. I lost enough of my hearing between a nasty virus 29 years ago and working in noisy factories before there was an OSHA and earplugs. I just lived with it and learned how to read lips enough to get by with smiling when I didn’t hear much of what was said.

This came to a screeching halt a couple of years ago when the boss said I had to get hearing aids. Remember I’m an assistant and you know who that makes the boss. Get the picture.

audiologistThat’s why I was at the audiologist. I got there a few minutes early and took the camera out of the bag and started walking around the parking lot. The place where I go looks very out of character for much of Tucson. It doesn’t look southwestern, instead it looks like a place plucked right out of the heart of the south.

There is grass and iron railings. And sycamore trees. When I first got out of the car the light was coming through the tree in front of me. The light passed right through a leaf lighting it up with almost a halo.

Two minutes later it was gone, the sun had moved on the leaf was just like a thousand other leaves on the tree. But for that moment what a glorious leaf it was.

We hope everyone has a good and safe labor day weekend. May you all have light to shine on you.

What’s wrong with your boss? Why does she work against her best interest?! ;-) This little quirk makes for a great husband! :-) And you have a legitimate excuse for not listening!

    Hey,

I never thought of it that way, I do have the perfect legitimate excuse. I actually can’t hear.

Yeah, and she can nag all she wants to and you won’t be even irritated and retaliate. ;-) Forget that aid! ;-)
