They were two different settlements located only one mile apart. Charleston had the gristmill. Tucson had the general stores and the Post Office. The gristmill was bought and moved to Tucson around the 1890’s. Charleston soon dried up. All that remains of Charleston is a very old one room school house.

That's a great question. Hopefully someone from the Ohio Tucson will have an answer.

Does anyone know when the name changed from Charleston to Tucson, who did it, and why? I've lived in Tucson (AZ) for about 40+ years but am originally from Montrose, KS, named for Montrose, Scotland.

I found Tucson, Ohio, on a map several years ago but just this past weekend decided to try to find out more about it. Defiance' - but they do have a 'Dudleyville.' And, we already know Pennsylvania has a 'Shanksville' (I have the history documented from 911). Maybe we should all sit down with a 'Place Names' book for all three states and find out how much they're alike? (we already know they're different) Suspiciously, I see another 'Club' forming ... could be a good excuse to drink beer.

I from the class of 68 a few years after you. You would have been gone by the time I hit high school.
The funny thing I wasn't related to any of the Smiths in school. There area simply a lot of us around anywhere.

Way Cool, thanks for letting us all know about how it is pronounced. I was amazed when doing some research to find another Tucson besides the one in AZ. Then finding it in Ohio was a bonus. The research was fun and if I ever have time would like to dig into it more. I'm related to a Ross family and their might be some times to that area. So now we know, Tukson it is.
Thanks Joyce for dripping by.

I was born and raised very near there and went through Tucson everyday going to school--and Mooresville. (and that was many years ago) WOW Thanks for writing about the place. I still have family there also.

Tucson, Ohio is pronounced Tukson.
