Tucson Rain A Mini Monsoon in December

Dutch Boy Blue Sky

When I was a boy growing up in Ontario, Ohio we got a lot of rain and snow from the “Lake Effect” coming off Lake Erie. At the clouds would pull back and little patches of blue would start to appear. Mom would say, “Well, there’s enough blue to make a Dutch boy a pair of pants.” Whenever we get a lot of rain or cloudy weather I still say it out loud. The girls look at me like I’ve lost it, that’s another topic, but for me it is a tie back to my childhood in Ohio. Well, this afternoon the clouds parted and I got this shot of enough blue to make . .

I take a lot of pictures of clouds. During the Tucson Monsoons season I get some really good images. The Big white rolling high thunderhead kind of clouds are my favorite. I have a friend that said to me this summer, “You don’t see clouds very often do you?” That is true. For the most part is it sunny in Tucson, sometimes windy but almost always sunny. So this stretch of 4 days of rain, some say 5 because we got some rain on the 5th day has stretched a lot of people who aren’t used to this much cloud cover. Yeah, Yeah, I know this is nothing compared to other parts of the country. It is kind of payback for us saying to visitors “But it’s a dry heat.” It might be 105 degrees out side and you will see people in long sleeves while the visitors are melting.

One of the things I always see in the fall of the year are the pictures of beautiful colored leaves floating on water, sometimes running water with the time exposure silky flowing water look. Well you can imagine that a pretty hard shot to duplicate here in Tucson. We don’t get a lot of color in the fall leaves. We have almost no running water, no streams, no creeks, no tad polls, no running rivers, you get the idea so getting a fall shot like that is very difficult.

I stepped out the front door last night just before sunset. The rain was still a drizzle so no camera in hand. There by the walk was a little puddle of water on rocks. There were even a couple of leaves with a bit of color. I thought if the skies clear tomorrow I’m going to try and get a shot before the water drains away.

About an hour ago, the sun suddenly broke out even with a few drops still falling. But few enough I grabbed the camera and headed for the little puddle. I had to throw in a couple of leaves, but that is what creative photography is about.

No this isn’t an image for submission to Digapixblog.com it was just for fun. But I did take the time to get rid of some weeds in the water on and under the rocks. If you click on the small image I have one that isn’t cropped quite as tight as the one on this page.

I could talk about Tucson and Water. I could talk about preventing mold and how important that is in selling your home. I could talk about water harvesting. But for today I just want to talk about enough blue for a pair of pants and a leaf floating on a rare December puddle in Tucson, Arizona.
