Tucson Students Proclaim August 4th Last Day of Freedom

Tucson Schools Start Thursday August 6th

For some it will be a little later, but no matter all will be in school before the second week of August is finished.   Since Wednesday is “Meet the Teacher” day, today is the last true day of freedom.   But for most that declaration alone means they are not free.   Already they have given into the idea that summer is over and their fall sentence begins tomorrow with Meet the teacher orientation.

One of the things I found interesting when I first moved to Tucson was how early in the “Fall?” Tucson schools began.   In many parts of the country families set aside a couple of weeks in August for the family vacation.

When I was in school, (I’ll spare you the rest of that) school started the week after Labor Day, usually on the Wed or Thur after.   For those that don’t know about such things, Labor Day is in September.

For families moving to Tucson from almost any other part of the country this comes as a real shock to the kids.   Even those that have grown up here all their lives are shocked when it is still 100 degrees out everyday and the beginning of August rolls around.   Their cousins are leaving on vacation to Colorado for a rafting and fishing trip and they are instead getting ready to ride the bus to school.

Even though I don’t got to public school, and we don’t have any children in public school it still has an effect on our daily lives.   Once school starts it takes a lot longer to get almost anywhere.   We subconsciously add up how many school crossing intersections we traverse in any trip and add time for each during our commute.

Ah it seems for all, retired, working, or school age, the start of school is not a call for celebration.   Instead it is marked as part of the passage of time in a year.   “What, its time for school to start again? Already”   As the kids all groan in unison.
