Tucson Winter 2007

It isn’t officially winter in the United States until the first day of winter December 21st, I believe unless they have moved it recently due to global warming. Today’s high was predicted to be 80. It is currently 85. The sun will be going down in about 45 minutes. I say all of this because some people thinking about retiring or spending the winter in Tucson have been asking what is the winter supposed to be like this year.
We have been tying or breaking records most of November. Last winter we had one of the hardest freezes on record. But it only lasted for a day, broke a lot of pipes collapsed a few ceilings, and mostly killed a lot of landscaping and robbed most of us of our free citrus for the year.
This winter I’m predicting, I’m predicting, I’m predicting, WE WON’T HAVE ONE! Seems to me this winter in Tucson is going to be what most of the country calls a MILD SUMMER.
Some of you are thinking “He has a bad cold, is on too many drugs and can’t be saying what he thinks he is saying about this winter.” Yep, I have a bad cold, I’m probably on too many drugs, but I still think this is going to be a very warm, dry, winter in Tucson.
So what am I doing about it? I bought a Weber Smokey Joe grill. I have a gas grill but the girls think food tastes better cooked over a charcoal fire. Specifically a mesquite charcoal fire.
Almost a life time ago I had a Smokey Joe I took everywhere for cookouts. Wrapped the whole thing in tin foil and threw it in the van. Worked great then, figure it will work great now. I got one at Home Depot yesterday, I think it was yesterday, I’m on drugs with a bad cold remember. I put it together this afternoon and went to Fry’s and bought a bag of mesquite charcoal. This is real western style charcoal. No nicely shaped brickets. It looks like wood, real wood, a real western kind of charcoal on the grill. Not just any grill but a Smokey Joe.
My fire tonight is for that initial burn-in. The one most people are too impatient to do. I’m pretty patient. And besides, I needed the fire for the post tonight on winter in Tucson and the hope of a burger on the grill over a mesquite charcoal fire.
I’ve scheduled just one more day for this cold. I don’t get them often. It has been years since I had one that made me hurt like this one. Not so much hurt as feel like my head is a melon about to explode as it is dropped from a 30 story building. So by tomorrow evening I can have whatever I want on the mesquite fire grill and it won’t taste or smell of paint.
Has anybody ever fixed spaghetti over a mesquite charcoal grill? Remember I still have a cold and am on drugs. But the Tucson Winter of 2007 is going to go into the record books as one of the warmest on record. But it isn’t so warn I need oven mitts to drive the car. It isn’t so warm people try and be the first car to the shady parking spot. But it is warm enough to grill outside at night in shorts and a T shirt. I love winter in Tucson.
