Why Is There A Watch Pocket in My Shorts

I go to the counter to pay and all my change is in the watch pocket. How long has it been since guys carried around pocket watches? There is no chain attached to change so I can easily pull it out like I could a pocket watch if I had one that is.
I don’t see them for sale at Target. I don’t see anyone carrying them. With cell phones many men don’t even wear a watch anymore, let alone carry a pocket watch on a chain clipped to their belt. Belt, who wears a belt anymore?
If you yell in a crowd for anyone with a pocket watch to wave their hand over their head the only person waving is the one with a question “Hey, Buddy, What’s a pocket watch?”
Yet like some leftover of a century past it seem all men’s dress pants come with a watch pocket. Even my Tucson casual summer shorts bought at Costco have a watch pocket.
Like a throw back to a century ago they even make the pockets out of material that looks like old mattress ticking. (please don’t ask what mattress ticking is)
What is it about the watch pocket that time and tailors seem to have forgotten?
I’m stuck with the darn thing & I’ve been working on what to do with them. I don’t like my keys in them, too hard to get out. I don’t like my change in there, I have to cup my hand in a special way each morning to make sure it doesn’t drop in there; it still does like a moth to flame, but I try.
Things I can put in a watch pocket
- I can put my cell phone in a watch pocket
- I can put a camera in a watch pocket
- I can put my change and keys in a watch pocket (you already know I hate them in there)
- I can put a coin holder in a watch pocket (Dad carries one of them but he never carried a pocket watch)
- I can put the garage door opener in a watch pocket
- I can put a Ekey in a watch pocket
- I can put a small bottle of water in a watch pocket
- I can put eye drops in a watch pocket
- I can put pills in a watch pocket
- I can put a calculator in a watch pocket
- I can put a thumb drive in a watch pocket (or an SD memory card)
- I can put a rock in a watch pocket (don’t laugh I have one on my desk I found on a hike and put it in my watch pocket, so there)
Even with all these things I can put in a watch pocket I would prefer they not exist.
Did I mention my shorts are cargo shorts : ) I have lots of extra pockets for my camera, cell phone, ekey, calculator and room for a big bottle of water to boot. I don’t need a watch pocket, I don’t want a watch pocket and I wish someone would save the cloth that goes into adding a watch pocket and make the price of men’s dress slacks cheaper and knock at least a nickel off the price of my shorts.
Hey I guess you can buy a pocket watch at Target. I still don’t want one.
Do you think the Tucson summer heat is getting to me? 110 today, and continuing through the next week. Boy am I glad we are going to Phoenix for the next 4 days, it is just to cold here in Tucson. I need a warmer climate for a few days.
Darn watch pockets.

what a geek, who carries a calculator in their pocket? I think it is time that you bought a pocket watch.

If I bought a pocket watch I wouldn’t have anyplace to put all this other stuff.
I could put a chain on my cell phone which tells time and call it a digital pocket watch. But with a short chain I might hurt my neck trying to answer the phone.
Best to leave it the way it is and remove the pocket.
