Wings of Freedom Tour in Tucson

P-51 Mustang

P-51 Mustang

The Wings of Freedom Tour Flew into the Marana Regional Airport yesterday afternoon.   (Let me apologize to Marana for putting Tucson in the title, I defer to search engines knowing how people search).

The exibit will be here through Monday.   The price of admission for Adults is $12   for children $6 for those under 12.   The exhibit opened yesterday at 2 pm.   There was a small crowd there most of the afternoon.   You can go inside the bombers and see exactly what it was like sitting in the various positions of the planes.

There is a B-17   Flying Fortress and B-24 Liberator along with the P-51 Mustang.

If you love old aircraft these are real beauties.   They are in excellent condition.   Photographing them was one of the main reasons people seemed to be there yesterday.   If you have lots of cash you can fly in or fly these planes.   Flights are before and after the exhibit hours each day.

Today through Monday they are on exhibit from 9:30 am – 5 pm.

For more details on the exhibit and flight prices go to   www.cfdn.org

They are amazing up close and a part of history which can be touched in a way that goes beyond a classroom or book.

Thanks for the idea, I enjoyed it mucho. Can you imagine 10 to 12 guys in one of those machines? A different breed at a different time. And that ball turret gunner! Yikes!

Still enjoy your blog and sharing it at Saddlebrooke. Now an experienced 22 day resident of the area. (?)

During a morning ‘bird-count’ this Saturday (April 24th, 2010) for the University of Arizona in the north-west part of Tucson, I was extremely fortunate to observe, very-closely, a WWII B-24 Liberator fly over the Silverbell Rd/Ina Road intersection in north-west Tucson. I already knew of the ‘Wings of Freedom’ tour in our city during April from a local radio station and was keen on hoping to see at least one of the three aircraft in the skies over Tucson during the week-end. I was extremely fortunate to watch the B-24 Liberator, at low altitude, over that very intersection – and with binoculars. What a gorgeous WWII bomber flying over Tucson skies! I had spectacular and close-up views and was able to indentify tail-markings, the nose-paintings, and hear the incredible sound of a 70-year-old 4-engined WWII bomber flying through the gorgeous air of a beautiful Tucson morning. It was one of the most precious moments of my life…and I will remember it forever. My Dad flew a twin-engined B-26 Martin Marauder during WWII in the Med Theatre as Pilot in Command at age 21 with a crew of 7. I never got to hear those engines…

    Bob,

Such a great moment. Thanks for sharing. I went last year to see the planes. I hope I have time tomorrow to go back and see them again.
