I posted this image with the same title and got a few comments about how funny it was to think of a river without water in it. Unless you live in Tucson that is. Over the years we have had people who were planning on moving to Tucson say they wanted a home on a river.
We usually respond there aren’t many of them but they do exist. By the way are you aware we don’t have any water in our rivers?
If you have never been to the desert southwest you might find this hard to believe. It has never even crossed peoples minds that there could be rivers without water in them.
I took this photo at Iowa City, Iowa of the Iowa River just a few weeks after the great flood of 2008 that flooded most of downtown Cedar Rapids and much of the University of Iowa. My daughter and son-in-law were walking with me after an evening dining out at “Atlas” (which was wonderful by the wa), when I told them the title of the image, they had to laugh. They have spent time in Arizona and got it immediately.

Hello,
I saw your article today and want to share my views,
I live in a house in Tucson which backs to Santa Cruz river.I do see flowing river one day on two every year usually in monsoon season. Those days we do Barbecue outside and enjoy as much as we want. The sound of flowing water is amajing mix with twinkling city lights and you get wonderful evening.I am gonna miss this time always as i am relocating to other city.My house is on sale so if anybody interested for Home by the river in Tucson let me know.By the way very nice article.
Mona,
Glad you took the time to comment, you have to be one of the few people in Tucson to have a home on a river with water in it even if it is just a couple of days a year.
Good luck in your relocation. I’m sure someone will want your home on the river. Hope where you are moving you can get a river with water flowing a little more often. : )
I thought that picture looked familiar. I have been to that town. I grew up in a river town in Minnesota, the river there had hydro dams on it though, and boy was it strange to see one year when they drained a section of the river between 2 dams so that repairs could be preformed. Old cars, boats, and even a old slot machine were found.
Dave, isn’t funny how many people want to move to the desert yet live on the water? People ask Jacqui about that all of the time. Of course we do have Lake Mead, but there aren’t any housing developments with lake front property on it (yet).
