I wrote the other day about a trip to Boise, Idaho we are planning for October. One of the first things I did was set up a Google Alert.

Google Alerts

If you have never heard of a “Google Alert”, let me till you about them; they are pretty cool.

Google Alerts notify you by email on the schedule you chose whenever a word or phrase you have chosen is indexed in their search engine.

Setting Up a Google Alert

You want to find out about “Tucson AZ” or “Tucson Real Estate” Or maybe an event like “Tucson Air Show”

  • Go to your Google account and click on Alerts
  • Enter the phrase you want new information about.
  • If you want the phrase you put it in quotes, if just the words then no quotes.
  • Select type: If you want just videos or blogs select those I select “Comprehensive”
  • Select how often you want to be notified. I always select “as it happens”
  • Save The Alert

Examples:

You are taking a trip to, Oh let’s say “Boise Idaho” and you want information about it. I set up an Alert on “Boise Idaho” and “Boise Real Estate” because I’m interested in each of these and what is being written about them.

I’m getting about 20 to 25 alerts a day with all kinds of information about Boise from sports, to events and city happenings.

I’m also finding out who is writing about the Boise Real Estate market because only new information is being sent to me in alerts.

I want to know when the next Tucson Air Show is going to be, but I’m having a hard time finding out information on dates. (It happens every other year, 2008 wasn’t the year). I would set up an Alter for “Tucson Air Show” As new information is indexed I get the alert in my email.

The alerts come with results like a search page. The title of the page or post an excerpt of information and the website link to click and go there.

As soon as this post is indexed in Google’s search engine, which usually takes from 10 minutes to 2 hours after I publish them anyone with an alert set up for Tucson Air Show or Boise Idaho will be getting an alert notice in their email.

If you don’t want them right away you can have Google send them once a week or once a day. You can stop the alerts anytime you like.

Other uses for Google Alters

  1. Some people set up an alert on their own name to see what is being said about them on the internet
  2. If you have a website or blog you can set up an alert to see when you new information is indexed by google
  3. A search on friends or organizations you belong to
  4. As already mentioned an upcoming event

I have about 10 different alert set up for various reasons. I do not have an Alert set up for my own name. It is way too common and I’m not interested in what others are saying about my name : )
