Please Don’t Pet the Cactus
When people come shopping for a home in Tucson for many it is a memorable experience. It is very interesting the kinds of preconceptions people have of Tucson. Some think it is all brown and desolate, kind of like death valley with houses.
Others are impressed with how green it is. Rabbits, there are rabbits everywhere and quail with a little thingy on their heads.
What do you mean there isn’t any grass? Where is the grass? We mostly have granite for lawns.
Three things I wouldn’t want to be in Tucson
- A lawn mower salesman
- A snow blower salesman
- A sump pump salesman (we don’t have basements)
One other things people are amazed at the size and variety of cactus we have in Tucson. Even if you have never been to Tucson or the desert there are some general rules that most have learned about cactus even if it is from touching grandma’s christmas cactus back home. If you touch a cactus you will get thorns.
You might be able to touch a toad and not get warts, but touch a cactus and the only question is “How many thorns did you get”?
Some cactus have thorns that shout out DON’T YOU DARE TOUCH ME! Not to hard to keep people from reaching out to touch those. They are like the one above. I could show you lots of different kinds of cactus some of which seem to jump at you when you get close.
But the soft fuzzy inviting cactus are the ones we have the hardest time keeping people from wanting to reach out and pet them. They don’t look like a cat, they do look soft, they look soft because they don’t just have thorns they have a gazzilion thorns.
You see several thorns and they look really scary, big thorns are the same, but they are easy to get out. Now, the fuzzy cactus, they are something else. Like a siren song to sailors are the fuzzy cactus to petters. They are drawn to touch them, to pet them to see how soft they are.
Whenever we go to a house with a fuzzy cactus I automatically sound the alarm as we approach so no one is caught off guard. “DON’T PET THE CACTUS”. For most it works, but for some, it is like they can’t hear with their ears once they have seen it with their eyes. They are drawn to them like a moth to light. They can’t help themselves and then it is too late.
Please look at this picture closely, click on it for a larger version. Make a note to yourself, especially if you are a “petter”. Do Not Be Tempted To Pet These Cactus. If you are a “petter” you should bring to Tucson a petter’s emergency kit. It contains, tape, peanut butter, elmer’s glue, and tweezers.
