The Color of The Cabinets

When looking for a house to make a home it is more important to look at the bones of the house than it is the color of the walls, carpet and cabinets.

Most things associated with color can be changed.  Granted the color of ceramic tile is harder to do ( I know, I’ve done it ) but painting walls and changing carpet are minor things to change compared to structural ( good bones ) issues in a property.

Brick Work Repair

Brick Work Repair

I took this image this weekend when we were out with our current first time home buyers.  They are a nice couple, we are enjoying helping them find their first home.  This is one of the eight homes we saw last Saturday.  While everyone else in the group starts on the inside of the house I always start on the outside.  I look at the foundation, walls, roof, etc.  I want to see if the house has “good bones”.  If there is major cracking, settling, or evidence of water intrusion, roof issues, wood rot etc. I want to know about it before I go inside.

I could tell from the brick work that pretty big crack had been repaired.  When I went inside there was evidence of the inside wall being patched as well.

I also want to know about the adjoining properties to the left, right and across the street.

Check out the Noisy Neighbors and  you will see one of the things I’m always looking for when we show homes.

Noisy Neighbors

Noisy Neighbors

Yeah, these friendly neighbors were at the fence the second I set foot in the back yard.  Noisy Neighbors is what I would call them and not the most friendly looking pair either.  I don’t own a dog, never wanted to own a dog but have several as friends (yes the four legged kind) but, I don’t like dogs that bark, and bark, and bark, and bark, and bark, and bark and bark some more; then drink some water and start all over again.

Now I’m ready to look at the inside, or maybe not, maybe I’m ready to go to the next place on the list.  I do know it isn’t the color of the carpet, cabinets or paint on the wall that is a deal maker or breaker for me.  But without Good Bones, I don’t care how “pretty” it is on the inside.

I understand you about having noisy neighbor’s dogs. I have dogs too but they’re not noisy…they just bark if someone outside rang the doorbell.
This is also my dilemma when I moved out from my parents’ home to find my own place. My first choice was a bungalow but the neighbor’s dogs were noisy so I opt for an apartment. I left my big dogs at my parent’s home but I brought with me my little chihuahua.
