The Abandoned Mentality of Home Ownership

The Abandoned Mentality of Home Ownership

This reminded me of an earlier time in our history when there was no buying a home to flip or make a fast buck. No McMansions, simple living.

Home ownership was to survive; put a roof over your head, protect your family from the elements. Basic heat, cooling, tin roof and small rooms.  None of the “Have to Have” issues.  Don’t get me wrong, I like cable TV and High Speed Internet.  I like air conditioning in the summer.

I don’t much care for getting someone’s approval for a flower pot in the front yard, or someone sending a notice of weeds that can’t tell the difference between a weed and a wildflower.

I wouldn’t want to live in this house in it’s current condition.  Deferred maintenance (LOL, that’s not an antenna on the roof, it is part of it sticking in the air).

I hope one of the things coming out of these hard economic times is a rediscovering of character.  A return to seeing the value in home ownership and maintaining a home because we value it instead of ruining a house then abandoning it and moving on to leave a mess for neighbors and community.  We need home owners who take pride in the house and make it a home.  A sanctuary for their family, a place of peace for all who enter, even if it doesn’t have the latest gadgets and amenities.

This type of home ownership has been abandoned and almost forgotten. It is sad because it is what built this country. Hard work and a willingness to do what it takes, to sacrifice and celebrate the day when all friends and family gathered together for the burning of the mortgage.

Hey Dave, Nice thought- I enjoyed reading your post. I think what your referring to is better know as the American Dream. I don’t think the American Dream is gone for good, I just think that we have lost some of our ideals (to greed and seeking profits over people) along the way. Yes- it would be refreshing to see a return to some simple, old fashion values, wouldn’t it?! Maybe we are at a turning point… White picket fences, take heart!

It is my hope that the crop of new First Time Home Buyers are those that have saved and value home ownership. Yes, it might be the “American Dream” That in the past decade has become “Get Rich Quick” instead of “Home Ownership”

    Have a great day!

    Dave
