“GREEN” is the buzz word for 2008. Lots of people are working to reduce their other buzz word “Carbon Footprint”.
One of the first steps usually taken is to buy low energy high output fluorescent lights. They last 7 times longer; some use only 13 watts of energy and have a 60 watts of light output.
So what’s the problem. You buy them and replace your existing lights as they burn out. Makes sense until you put your house on the market. One of the first things done is to have photos taken of your home.
Now to simplify the technical part of lights.
- Typical 60 watt incandescent light bulbs put out a yellow light
- Fluorescent lights put out a blue light
- Daylight balanced bulbs put out a white light (balanced as if it were outdoors in the sun)
Cameras and flash units can be set for indoor light incandescent or fluorescent but not both at the same time.
I prefer the Daylight balanced bulbs which put out a white light. This is the light of a flash unit without putting a gel on it to correct for other types of light. I keep two boxes of four bulbs each in my lighting kit and put them in lamps and lights as I go from room to room.
It takes a little extra time to replace these bulbs moving through the house. However, it takes less time to do this than to post process the images to get an even light.
Of course if you aren’t planning on selling anytime soon it doesn’t matter. I still prefer daylight balanced bulbs and use those in the office where I spend most of my time each day. The light from the lamp and the window are the same. This helps me when viewing images on screen as well so I have the same kind of light hitting the monitor no matter what angle I’m looking at it.
The four packs of these bulbs currently are running $9.99 at Walgreens. A single bulb is $4.99. You can see why the four pack is a bargain. If you haven’t experienced Daylight balanced bulbs you are in for a treat.
Disclaimer: I don’t work for Walgreens and they didn’t pay me to write about these bulbs. I don’t care where you buy them, what you pay for them or the brand of light. I do however, suggest you buy Daylight balanced bulbs while you are going “GREEN“.
