Tucson Home Sellers Looking Into the Crystal Bowl

clean bathroomA couple of weeks ago I was reading the morning paper (yes, at McDonalds) when an article caught my eye about company restrooms.  There are only a few things Barbara is really picky about but clean restrooms is one of them.  We will drive 5 miles out of our way to get to a clean restroom.  (Don’t tell her I said so)  : )

Please note you will need an azstarnet account to read these articles since the Arizona Daily Star is now a subscription site.  If you are interested in Tucson Real Estate and read the blog you might as well get an account since articles from the paper are referenced often here and on our other blogs.

Dale Dauten wrote about “Restrooms generate no profits but reveal a lot about a company“  I think the first thing that caught my eye was the reference to “Faulty Towers” a very funny British sitcom staring John Cleese.  It was classic.

Dale goes into detail about the things he loves and hates about company restrooms.  Stating that restroom do not generate a profit but say a lot about your business.  Yeah I know that’s in the title.

His article generated a lot of conversation and email back to him on the subject leading to the follow up article this week “Restrooms reflect on your business’s quality“  There was/is plenty of opinions on restrooms especially ladies rooms.

Leading Dale to conclude: “You might find wisdom on a men’s room wall, but it’s the ladies’ room where you can find money.”  The responses from women about corporate restrooms were a good read especially the one complaining about the two sheet stop on toilet paper rolls.  But the point Dale made and I’m making is summed up in another quote from Dale

“OK, here’s the bigger issue. Bad restrooms aren’t just annoyances; they are a kind of anti-marketing, especially among women.”

What applies to a company also applies to a home, especially if that home is on the market.

Clean, clean, clean Bathrooms

  1. Clean the floors and toilet bowls till they shine.
  2. Replace the seats if they are worn.
  3. Provide air freshener or potpourri.
  4. Keep the roll full and the lid down.
  5. Keep them flushed (small children sometimes forget to do this).

potpouriiI will spare you going into the part about dirty bowls and feet sticking to the floor, whoops I guess I didn’t, but you can see how this would be anti-marketing for your home.  The only one I’ll explain here is the lid down.  There are some who are so involved with Feng Shui if they find the lids on the toilets up they will leave the house since this allows the positive energy to leave the home.  Go figure.  So close the lid.

Ok, I’ll add one more.  Those seats, how old are they?  Do they show some wear, do they show something else?  Then spend a few dollars and get new seats.  Chalk it up to marketing expense.

Remember, this isn’t your home anymore.  When you put it on the market it now becomes a commodity you are selling.  Make your bathrooms work for you not against you.  And put some more chocolate in the dish before you leave the house in the morning.
