Tucson I’m not worried about the price of rice

bag of riceI was listening to NPR Morning Edition on the way to breakfast the other morning when I heard that Costco and Sam’s Club were limiting the amount of rice that could be purchased at any one time.

Food Rationing in America? Are you kidding me. I listened on with interest. The limits were on the number of 20 lbs. bags that could purchased. There are countries in the world right now facings huge shortages of rice bringing inflations roaring into that market. The price of rice along with milk, bread, and eggs is increasing all the time.

I was tempted to go right down to Costco and get a 20 pound bag in case I couldn’t get one, or couldn’t afford one later.

Then I remembered “We don’t eat rice!” Nope, we don’t eat rice. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a bag of rice in our cupboard. I know I haven’t cooked with rice in years. The shortage of rice and the price will change, it will eventually come down. Will I notice? Not unless I’m in the market to buy rice.

Tucson Real Estate and the Price of Rice

Thankfully, the homes we live in are not consumables. Unless we are termites that is. What’s my point. Unless you are selling a house or plan on buying a house don’t get caught up in the frenzy over housing. The value of a piece of property is determined at the sale/purchase of that property. Everything in between is speculative value not real value. It is like the value of stocks, no matter if it is up or down you aren’t any richer if it is up or poorer if it is down unless on that day you are buying or selling.

I’ve never thought of it that way. Some people buy and sell homes as soon as they make a little money, but for most of us, we’re just living in it.

If you’re not going to sell your home, who cares what it’s worth? I guess maybe it’s just the sense of security that equity provides.

Yes the value of a house is relative if you live there and it’s your home then why worry.

Does this mean you sell rice too?
