Mobile Web we are ready
I author a tech blog focused on real estate blogging. It primarily deals with the WordPress.org (self hosted) blogging platform. Back in October I put into place a feature which is invisible to the typical viewer of this site. But if you are viewing the blog from a mobile device like an iPhone or Blackberry the site will load very quickly.
This blog automatically knows if you are coming from a mobile device and will provide you with the optimized view. In the coming years more and more people are going to be accessing the web through mobile devices. The typical website/blog can take along time to load on a mobile device and often doesn’t look anything like the it does on a computer monitor.
When I first posted about this feature and adding it to blogs it got a ho hum, YAWN from the readers. Earlier this week I posted about this feature again on the tech blog and called it “Your Most Important WordPress Plugin for 2009”
Since then it has gotten more attention and one reader in particular Chuck Gillooly wrote a post “White Oaks Blog now optimized for Mobile Browsing“. Chuck like I have been amazed at the difference the load time is for our blogs when running this feature.
It was sometime yesterday when it dawned on me “Hey, I’ve had this installed since October but never told anyone about it, DUH!” It was Chuck’s post that hit me up side the head and made me realize not only should I be telling other bloggers about getting their blogs ready for “The Mobile Web” they should let their readers know about it once the feature is installed. This is what I’m doing now.
If you have a mobile browser you can read this blog and even leave comments You should find the site loading quickly from your mobile device.
Since getting my own Blackberry Curve last September I’ve spent a lot more time accessing the web from that device while I’m out of the office. I can read and respond to email. I can approve comments for any of the blogs and I can even leave comments.
A month ago I started a mobile blog. The posts on that blog are done entirely from the Blackberry and include photos as well as text.
Oh, okay, since you ask it is Dave In Tucson which some of you will already recognize as my “handle” on the web. Let’s face it when your name is Dave Smith you have to find a way to be “found”.
The “Mobile Web” is going to be one of the phrases you will hear in 2009. More and more people are going to be browsing the web from their iPhone, Blackberries and other mobile devices. This is the future of web browsing. It is already here and we are ready.
One thing I like when I’m browsing from the BlackBerry is the option on the browser “Mobile Web” When I do a search while “Mobile Web” is selected I only get sites returned that have been optimized for mobile browsers.
If you are accessing this blog from a mobile device would you leave a comment and let me know what device you are using. I’ve heard of some using an iPhone not being able to leave comments. I did find one instance on the tech blog where it would only allow comments if I clicked on the link “Be the first to leave a comment”. It was set to be optimized for iPhone, once I set it back to the default option for all mobile devices it would allow me to comment.
I’m always striving get information and content about Tucson and the Tucson Real Estate Market to our readers quickly and efficiently. The mobile web is the future and we are ready. Thanks for your input. I look forward to hearing your comments on how the blog looks and functions from your mobile device.

I think the wave of the future in real estate search will be via native iPhone search applications. There are several available for the iPhone and we just released ours- Blue Atlas Broker. Check it out I would be interested in your comments.
Thanks,
Tony

tony,
As I mentioned in the post iPhones really don’t work in Tucson. The coverage here is terrible. And for me they are way to expensive on a monthly basis vs the Blackberry.
That said I think you are right, those native iPhone apps are one of the things that make it attractive as a mobile browsing device.
